Moving into an office role after working in fast food and part-time retail jobs at Westminster Mall was a major wake-up call. I was nervous, scared, and unsure whether I could do it.
During those first few weeks, I probably went home and cried most nights. There was so much typing. Back then, everything was done on typewriters.
At the time I started that new job, I had no idea I would still be in this industry 37 years later. My dream was to be a movie star or rock star, which is funny because I have never liked being the center of attention.
Cancellations, Reinstatements, and 10-Day Notices
There were three file stacks, each about three feet tall:
- Cancellations
- Reinstatements
- 10-day notices
Cancellations went out on bonds that were no longer needed, had unpaid premium, or had missing requested documents.
Reinstatements were used to reactivate a cancelled bond with no lapse in coverage.
10-day notices reminded the principal to submit required items if they wanted to keep their bond in force.
In short: lots of typing. And if you remember Part 1, I was told I could not type worth… well, you know.
The People Who Helped Me Grow
I worked with some incredible women in that office. Even if they may have thought Marcia was a little crazy for hiring me, they still helped me and taught me a lot.
Carol and Aurora were a big part of that journey. I lost touch with Carol many years ago, but thanks to social media I reconnected with Aurora and even got to visit her on a trip to Northern California.
